Is Your Hair and Scalp Oily?

Is your scalp oily, which causes dandruff? Do you wash your hair every other day, which dries it? If you don’t wash it every other day, your scalp gets oily, causing dandruff and hair loss to increase.

Those with weak and thinning hair have more hair follicles and sebaceous glands. If you have fine hair, it means there is too much oil secreted by your scalp and not enough hair to absorb it. Also, fine and thinning hair appears limp or greasy easier. Dandruff flakes may trap oil discharge from the sebaceous glands and make hair greasy. Hormones cause dandruff formation. Menstruation is the cause of hormonal changes leading to over-active sebaceous glands on the scalp which results in more sebum excretion. Any amount of sebum causes oily hair and an oily scalp.

If either of your parents has oily hair, there’s a high chance they’ve passed on that gene to you.

Frequent washing strips hair of natural sebum. Your scalp’s response is to put into overdrive to replace the natural oil, resulting in your hair feeling and looking greasy even though you have just rinsed it. Using hot water to wash your hair stimulates the sebaceous glands and encourages them to produce more sebum. Wash your hair when needed. The clue is when you feel your scalp itching.

Using too many hair products such as conditioner, serum, hair gel, hair wax, and mousse can build up on your scalp and wreak havoc on the functioning of the sebaceous glands. Alcohol-based products pose a more serious problem. These products, mixed with sebum, can weigh your hair down and make it look greasy. Applying too much conditioner to your hair and applying it right from the roots only weighs your hair down and makes it look greasy.

Brushing too much makes hair oily. The brush distributes natural oil from the scalp and throughout the hair. If the brush is used to brush the scalp, it can activate oil production because it stimulates the entire scalp.

Oily Scalp Problems…
Hair fall – An oily scalp causes oil to build up around the hair follicles, preventing hair breathing. As a result of this weakening, the hair falls out.

Limp hair – Hair that looks thin due to excessive oil weighing it down. It also causes hair fall which further causes thinning hair and makes hair look thin.

Dirty and Dull hair – Pollution and dirt that gets trapped in the oil in your hair making it look dirty and stripping it of its natural shine. Your hair looks dull and lifeless no matter how often you wash it. It also contributes to hair fall and causes scalp infections.

Split ends – It is a way to make hair look less oily. We wash our hair often and while this helps make the roots look less oily, it can severely damage the ends of the hair. This leaves them prone to breaking ends.

Vitamin B plays an active role in sebum production and regulation. Not having enough of this nutrient leads to sebum levels being haywire and makes your hair oily.

Straight hair tends to be oily because sebum travels evenly from the roots to the tips without curls or twists to obstruction. The hair-growing phases can be short before long, but the hair will shed. Strands may be finer and weaker, and the hair might feel greasy.
